How to Fish beginner guide
The How to Fish beginner guide starts on the crash island with no rod, no gun, and no boat upgrade. The first hour is a shop-board walk: pick up the Crab Fishing Rod, hang a Free lure or a Hot Dog, and land Rock Crab, Shrimp, or Lobster. Sell enough to buy a fight, then hang the Empty Beer Can when you are ready for Spider Crab — Who stole my beer wants that culprit carried to the lighthouse keeper. Patch 1.0.5 blocks travel to locked islands, so Forest is not a skip. Patch 1.0.11 then adds the hold-once sell rule that stalls anyone dumping trophies straight onto a counter. Keep the Empty Beer Can for Spider Crab and walk it to the keeper. That is the whole first boss. Forest is a later dock.
Catch: you spawn with no gear. The first rod is whatever the crash island leaves you, and the Free lure or a Hot Dog is enough for Rock Crab, Shrimp, and Lobster.
First hour on the lighthouse

Getting started is simply the first kill. Drip is a rare variant of a regular catch, not a separate island. Let me go happens when a seagull lifts you; it is not a fail state you have to reset. Grillmaster is lighting the grill, not a cooking minigame with hidden recipes. The Crab Fishing Rod covers lighthouse water. Free lure takes Rock Crab and Shrimp; Hot Dog takes Rock Crab and Lobster. That pairing is the whole first-hour bait board.
Do not sail for Forest until the lady’s dinner quest and the beer thief are on the board. Patch 1.0.5 closed the bug that let boats visit locked islands. Bean (finish in one hour) has to follow the same unlock chain after that patch. There is no lighthouse-to-volcano skip on the current board. Keep sold cash for a weapon off Melvin’s rack — the official still shows a pistol, knuckles, a knife, and dynamite hanging beside the lures.
Ground items persist between sessions up to 64 after Patch 1.0.10, with weapons, tools, quest items, and creatures kept first. Cooked weapons dunked in water uncook. Those two notes matter in the first hour because a dropped rod or an Empty Beer Can can still be there after a crash to desktop, and a grilled tool is not stuck cooked if you find a shoreline.
Cash from Rock Crab, Shrimp, and Lobster is the first shop money. The official cabin still shows a pistol, knuckles, a knife, and dynamite on the same rack as the lures. Buy a fight after the first sells, not before you have a rod. Grillmaster is lighting the grill on this dock; it is not a recipe list. Getting started is the first kill, which can be a crab, and does not require Spider Crab.
Beer thief and the keeper
Spider Crab is the lighthouse boss. Rod: Crab Fishing Rod. Bait: Empty Beer Can. The achievement text is the quest: find and kill the culprit, and bring it to the lighthouse keeper. Keep that trophy if you still need the turn-in; selling it first is how the first hour stalls. Who stole my beer sat at 91.8% global unlocks in the sealed capture, so most crews do hang this bait. Carry the body; do not leave it on the sand next to the sell prompt.
Empty Beer Can is a boss bait, not a regular lure. It does not replace Free lure or Hot Dog for Rock Crab. Hang it when you are ready to fight, not as your first cast. After the keeper takes the culprit, Forest opens through the usual quest and island lock, not through a hidden channel. Dinnertime on the next island wants dinner for the lady in the forest; that is a later peg, not a lighthouse skip. If a seagull lifts you during the hunt, Let me go pops — walk back and keep the beer can in hand.
Hold before sell
After 1.0.11 an item must have been held once before it can be sold. Pick the body up. A creature dumped straight from the water onto a sell prompt does not count. That rule is why a first-hour trophy left on the dock is not auto-cash, and why the beer thief must be carried to the keeper rather than vendor-sold from the shoreline.
The same hold applies later when Tuna, Fish Bucket, and Bowhead Whale are also the next boss bait. Treat unique quest baits as inventory, not as a cash spike. If you are chasing Bean, budget the hold animation and the keeper walk into the hour. Easy difficulty (Patch 1.0.9) cuts creature health 25% and damage 50% if the first boss is eating the clock; that setting is a main-menu and in-game toggle, not a new island.
Hold-once-before-sell and trophy keep
Patch 1.0.11 requires an item to have been held once before it can be sold. A creature dumped straight onto a counter does not count. Keep island-boss trophies that later baits need — Tuna baits Albatross, Fish Bucket baits Bowhead Whale, Bowhead Whale baits Mutated Bowhead Whale — instead of selling the first big catch automatically.
